The Power of Blue Interiors: A Designer’s Perspective

Designing homes across Sussex, Kent, and London, I’ve always been fascinated by how different colours can transform not just the look of a space, but also how it feels. Blue, in particular, is consistently one of my clients’ most beloved colours, and for good reason. Let’s explore how shades of blue can transform your living spaces, illustrated by my interior design projects.

The psychology behind blue interiors

Blue is an incredibly versatile colour in interior design. While some might perceive it as cold, the reality is far more nuanced. The blue spectrum offers both cool and warm tones, each bringing its own character to a space. Studies have shown that blue can have a calming effect, helping to reduce anxiety, and is often associated with water and the sky. It’s also said to improve focus and create a sense of security. It’s no coincidence that this colour is associated with trustworthiness and professionalism – think of classic business suits or police uniforms. So how can blue be used effectively in our living spaces?

Blue hues: From serene to striking

Each of my projects presents unique opportunities to explore different aspects of blue’s versatility. When deciding where to incorporate blue and which shade to go with, it’s essential to consider the lighting, size, and function of the room.

Pale and aqua blues

Lighter blues are often associated with calmness, making them ideal for spaces where relaxation is key, like bedrooms and living rooms. For instance, notice how we used a refreshing aqua for the blue sitting room below. Part of a 1970s house renovation project, this shade of blue helped offset the teak furniture and indigo sofa, creating the perfect balance of darker and lighter blues.

Pale blue shades are also associated with the sea and sky, often conveying a sense of openness and expansiveness. This makes them a great choice for smaller spaces that could benefit from a feeling of airiness and lightness. I was guided by this principle for the sitting room of the Georgian town house I designed below, based in Chelsea, London. I deliberately kept the palette quite limited here for this smaller space and opted for a soothing De Nimes blue.

Deep and dramatic blues

In contrast, deeper, more saturated blues radiate an air of sophistication and confidence. Rich navy or cobalt tones can ground a space, lending a sense of stability and reliability. I’ve often used these bolder blues for a striking effect, like when I paired petrol blue walls with an olive green sofa in the sitting room renovation below. The result was a dynamic, elegant space perfect for entertaining.

The art of using blue in interior design

When deciding on a blue palette for a client’s home, we always discuss these key elements.

The focal point of the room

Bold, vibrant blues can highlight architectural features, artwork, or furniture, creating visual interest and guiding the eye. For the Georgian family home in Kent pictured below, we let the Moroccan-style tiles set the tone for the stunning bathroom transformation, featuring a Basalt Blue vanity.

Functionality

Think about the intended use of the space. For example, pale blue’s calming properties can be used in spaces like bedrooms and offices, while bolder, more dynamic tones bring energy to communal areas.

Textures and finishes

Experimenting with matte, glossy, metallic and textured blue surfaces can add depth and dimension to a room, creating unique sensory experiences.

Balance and harmony

A cohesive blue palette that complements the overall aesthetic is also vital. For the adjoining bedroom to the blue bathroom pictured above, we created continuity with different hues, tones, and shades for a sophisticated, harmonious look.
