Do you love autumn? Then use this colour psychology to decorate your home
Do You Have An Autumn Decorating Personality?
Do you love autumn with its rich russet tones, beautiful oranges and warm, conker browns? Then, according to colour psychology, you could have an autumn personality.
But what does that mean?
Let’s delve a little into the power of colour first.
Colour is a powerful decorating tool that can make any living space come alive. Changing the colour of a wall can instantly change the atmosphere of a room, and I first became aware of just how much influence colour has when I attended a fantastic colour psychology course run by Rebecca Randall several years ago.
How does the colour used in our homes affect us?
Colour impacts our behaviour, emotions and wellbeing and can be used to:
Influence our mood - making us feel calmer, happier, livelier or more relaxed.
Evoke certain behaviours - such as wanting to eat more, be more sociable or, conversely, feel sleepier.
Increases comprehension.
Reduces stress and
Creates harmony.
Farrow and Ball have recently announced that their ‘Setting Plaster’ and ‘Sulking Room Pink’ paints are this seasons favourite shades for interior designers.
Colour Psychology reveals our personalities may drive our colour preferences
We all want a home that truly fits us. A place to call our own that makes us feel happy, loved and secure, and research has shown that the colours, and therefore the furniture, fabrics and artwork we are drawn to, may actually be driven by our personalities.
So back to the question of whether you have an autumn personality
People with autumn personalities are warm, earthy, flamboyant and passionate. They have a strong connection to nature, a love for comfort and a desire to collect and be surrounded by their favourite things.
Does that sound like you?
If so, you love to be in your home and creating a feeling of comfort and warmth is your strongest desire. You have a strong aesthetic sense and consequently appreciate design, quality and craftsmanship.
Colour psychology tells us that autumn personalities are drawn to rich and fiery colour palettes. That have a warm, welcoming feel created by underlying tones of sunset yellows and rusty reds. Their favourite schemes also incorporate terracotta, ochre, aubergine, muted olives and greens in rich intensities.
Autumn personalities love autumn and want to bring the hues of nature inside.

What to do next
Understanding the reasons why we are all drawn to specific colours is a fascinating topic and there are, of course, also spring, summer and winter personalities.
When it comes to decorating my home, I’m definitely an autumn personality (as you can see from the image below) but, if this doesn’t sound like you, visit Rebecca’s website to find out what you could be.
