How a stunning wall mural inspired this beautiful bedroom in Bromley

I love creating rooms with specific people in mind so was thrilled to be involved in the creation of this beautiful bedroom in Bromley for an elderly mum with mobility issues.

The Brief

My client wanted to create a restful retreat for her elderly mother who would soon be coming to live with her.  A modern annex had been created for this purpose and my client wanted it decorated in a style that would fit in with the rest of her home and acknowledge her mother’s South Asian heritage.

Initial Concept

Taking inspiration from the Arts and Crafts appearance of my client’s property, and her desire to use a colour scheme of green, pink and gold, my first mood board took inspiration from the craftsmanship and colours of the Victorian era. My client also loves pattern, so I used William Morris’ Indian Paper and the green marigold fabric to bring texture and interest to the scheme.

These elements were then combined with bamboo flooring and rattan wardrobes and bedside tables to help her mother feel at home.

Second concept

As an alternative, I also created a scheme that turned the area behind the bed into a focal point and took my clients love of ‘tree’ motifs into account. Inspired by the numerous cherry blossom festivals held across China, Korea, Japan and Vietnam in South Asia, I chose this version of Van Gogh’s blossom tree mural to add an impact and act as the foundation piece of the new design.

The winning concept

Having seen both designs, my client was keen to use several of the accessories and elements of the first scheme and combine them with a statement wall mural.  Van Gogh’s blossom tree mural was eventually discounted for being a little bit too busy as my client’s mother has Parkinson’s disease and has difficulties resting and sleeping.

So, I started searching for a softer, more tranquil mural that would work with the arts and crafts feel of the house and create a connection with the garden and biophilic elements used elsewhere in the annex.

The search was long but worth it when I found this fabulous lotus blossom mural from Coordonne.  It’s more ‘oriental’ in feel than previous choices but has a tranquility that suits the room and the rattan and bamboo elements chosen to give my client’s mother comfort and visual familiarity.

It has been a real pleasure seeing this beautiful bedroom in Bromley come together and I hope my client’s mother enjoys her calm and peaceful sanctuary.
